Lake Challenge Day 3
After a lonely and cold quick swim yesterday, I had a somewhat warm and long swim in the company of five others today.
Trevor Dowdney (police chief of Linn Creek) and I swam. While Dan Dougan (expert cyclist, kayaker and Oz Cycles owner), Tamara McClain (a local health enthusiast) and Kevin and Jade Sellers (also expert kayakers) paddled behind, ahead of and around us.
It was a sunny morning and the scenery, as it always is at the lake, was beautiful. Trevor took off the dock before me and started swimming. Before he did, he mentioned that I called him a “fairly good” swimmer in the newspaper. He seemed to take this personally as he swam much faster than I did and left me slowly plodding behind in his wake. Let me state for the record that Trevor is a very good swimmer but he needs to slow down and stop making me look bad.
The kayakers looked like they had a blast. I haven’t done much paddling but it looked like a lot of fun this morning – enjoying the air, talking across the water and getting some exercise in while they were at it. I’m going to have to climb into a kayak before this challenge is through.
We ended up swimming close to a mile – a total of around 35 minutes in the water. That’s much longer than I’ve swam in a long while. My arms are a little tired and I suspect they are going to be a little sore tomorrow. But that’s all in the process of getting in shape – no pain, no gain.
It’s now three days into the challenge. So far I’m feeling great. The extra exercise is getting me back in shape and swimming in the morning first thing – makes me feel like I accomplished something even before I head to work.
